Early this morning, 90-degree temperatures already baking anyone and anything outside, I had to pull a significant amount of weeds out of the small garden in front of our house.
Unfortunately, they were populated in the same spots where I had yanked out their predecessors just three weeks earlier, and had tripled in number. This time, I was taking no chances. I doused the perimeter of the garden with weed-killer, and then spread two large bags of mulch across the surface. I don’t want to see weeds growing in there again for a long, long time.
Too often we make the mistake of removing something we do not want and failing to replace it with something better. Old habits need healthier ones to fill the vacuum. We naturally revert back to what is most comfortable and familiar without the discipline to strive toward something more satisfying and transformative. The garden only grows to its fullest potential if the soil is carefully cultivated without significant neglect. Anyone willing to navigate change stands a strong chance of becoming such a garden of promise.
