My main 12 blogging categories (found along the left-hand side of each page of my Web site) have remained fairly consistent for much of the past year. What has evolved this week, however, is how I organize the flow of these categories.

The 12 are now divided into two parts: “Personal Application” and “Interpersonal Application.” The “personal” comes first because the work we do on ourselves makes us more fully available to interact with others in a healthy and productive manner. The blogging categories are:

Critical Thinking

Health and Fitness

Learning

Arts

Spiritual Growth

Vocation

Why this order? The progression of our thinking is crucial to being able to fully assess the dynamics and complexities of an ever-changing world, while maintaining physical and emotional health make us truly and fully available to collaborate and accomplish things with others. From this foundation of thinking and health, we can then engage in purposeful learning; be inspired by the arts; and grow as spiritual beings. Vocation, finally, is the culmination of all the efforts we make and the insights we glean among these preceding blog categories.

Moving from the personal to the interpersonal application of blogging ideas, then, the remaining categories are:

Change

Communication

Relationships

Leadership and Management

Coaching

Strategy

These six function not only as blog categories but “skill sets.” Our ongoing “personal growth” sets us up to effectively embrace and navigate the steady life companion known as change. Our skill in handling change shows up in how effectively we communicate and nurture relationships, since a lack of dealing with change leaves us scattered and struggling to express ourselves or relate well to others.

As we nail these first three “interpersonal” categories, we are more likely to be impactful agents of progress in our families, companies, non-profits and society in general. We can effectively lead and manage both people and processes; coach and develop others to garner better results; and craft strategies that can help organizations and individuals identify, pursue and achieve their goals.

Nothing worthwhile takes place in a vacuum. Therefore an integral approach to all of the blog categories is vital; in order to facilitate alignment and synergy that truly fosters a sense of success, optimism and peace.

A note to the reader: This purposeful re-structuring of my blog categories corresponds to the chapters of my upcoming motivational book, Assess, Collaborate, Execute: ACE Your Way Through Life. Look for ACE to be published in the very near future!
